Why was the Law given?

Galatians 3:19 Why then the Law? It was added because of transgressions, until the Seed should come to those to whom it had been promised, being ordained through angels in the Mediator's hand.

Many people want to keep 'The Law' but have no understanding or knowledge of what 'The Law' is.

Before we proceed we would like to clear up one dangerous misunderstanding of the word 'Turah', the 'Turah' is NOT the first five books of the Old Testament only it is the whole Word of God from Genesis through Revelation for a more in-depth understanding please see our article: What Do We Mean by the Term "Turah?"

Let’s have a look at why the Law was given.

Deuteronomy 31:25 -26, 25 he (Moses) gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of Yahuah (the LORD): 26 "Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.

The book of the law was put next to or beside the ark of the covenant, it was to remain as a witness against Israel because they broke/transgressed Yahuah's (the LORD's) covenant which is the 10 words please see Deuteronomy 4:13; Jeremiah 31:31-37; Hebrews 10:16-17.

Galatians 3:17-18, 17 What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by the Lord and thus do away with the promise. 18 For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in His grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

The law (or book of the law) came 430 years after Abraham so if one says Abraham kept the law they have some misunderstanding to sought out quickly, the verses above make a clear distinction between the 'law' and the 'covenant' Not only did Yahuah make a distinction between the two in Deuteronomy 31:25-26 but Paul also makes a distinction between the two in Galatians 3:19 what Abraham obeyed was Yahuah's Covenant NOT the Law of Moses which came 430 years after Abraham.

19 Why, then, was the law (Book of the Law Deuteronomy 31:25) given at all? It was added because of transgressions (Because Israel broke Yahuah's Covenant) until the Seed (Yahusha/Jesus) to whom the promise (Given to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3) referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator.

The law was given 430 years after Abraham because they transgressed and broke Yahuah's Covenant which is the 10 words spoken and written by Yahuah.

Ezekiel 20:25 So I (Yahuah/the Lord) gave them other statutes that were not good and laws through which they could not live (Book of the law Deuteronomy 31:25).

These statutes (written in the book of the law see Deuteronomy 31:25) were not good and that they could not live by them this is what was written in the book of the law as a witness against Israel see Deuteronomy 31:25.

Colossians 2:13-14, 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions (The breaking of the Covenant at Mt Sinai), 14 having cancelled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us (Book of the Law Deuteronomy 31:25 & Ezekiel 20:25); and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

This certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us (Book of the Law), which was hostile to us (statutes that were not good and ordinances by which they could not live); is exactly what we find in Deuteronomy 31:25-26 and Ezekiel 20:25.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under Law, but under grace.

Galatians 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

Where many get confused is there misunderstanding of thinking the 'LAW' and 'TURAH' are one in the same, well they are NOT one and the same they are very different. for more understanding about the word Turah please see: What Do We Mean by the Term "Turah?"

Please be like the Bereans in Acts 17:11 where they eagerly received the message examining the scriptures carefully every day to see if these things were so.

Don't reject something without searching the matter out, Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God/Aluhym to conceal a matter and it is the glory of a king to search out a matter.
